D2: Digital, FAIR, and High-Quality Research Data

Research data on the safety of advanced materials is generated in a multidisciplinary environment and includes data from material characterisation to toxicology. In order to make this data and the associated metadata (re-)usable for researchers and also manufacturers and regulatory authorities, it is important that the information is structured, coordinated and available in digital form. This is also increasingly required by funding bodies (Open Science, Open Data) and publishers and is increasingly expected as part of good scientific practice. Reproducibility of results and traceability of scientific data are thus improved.

In the context of safety assessment of advanced materials, data-driven concepts such as safe-by-design 1, 2, Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) 3, computational modelling and meta-analyses promote the development of new and safer materials. Partners of the research network are involved in further projects that are advancing this topic, such as: NanoS-QM 4 and InnoMatSafety.

    Our aim is to develop a research data infrastructure that:

  • meets the requirements of research on safety of advanced materials and
  • supports a data management along the FAIR-principles.

This must necessarily start at different points and integrate into existing national (NFDI) and international initiatives (EOSC). Development is taking place in parallel to the activities of the research alliance within the framework of spin-off projects.
